The Benefit of Alzheimer’s Support Groups for Caregivers

|

Group of rocks supporting one anotherIf you’re caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia, consider joining a support group. You may think, “How can that help me?” You might be pleasantly surprised at how much good a support group can do for you.

A support group blends both psychological support and practical experience, providing you with information, insight and value you just can’t get by reading up on Alzheimer’s disease on the Internet or talking with friends.

In the midst of a support group, you can ask questions and get answers. You can share you story and listen to others. You can learn care-giving strategies that may help you in your day-to-day challenges.

Most importantly, you will be surrounded and supported by people who share and understand your experience. You will be free to express any fears or frustrations without guilt.  A support group provides you with a safe environment in which to release your emotions without any fear of being judged. And that’s a wonderful way to cope with the stress you’re facing every day.

Finding a Support Group

Support groups for Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers are often sponsored and organized by local chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association, hospitals, churches, community organizations and others. Ask your loved one’s doctor for a recommendation for the group that might best suit your needs.

Plan for the Future

As your loved one's disease progresses, you may find it physically and emotionally impossible to provide the care he or she needs. Don’t wait until you have to make a quick decision about professional care. Do you research now. There are Assisted Living communities in Pinellas County that offer specialized Memory Care.
